The Bloomsbury Set
We have an early start this morning. Early enough to be in Bloomsbury for breakfast. And a bit of culture.
Back in June we were in Paris to see an exhibition of David Hockney’s work. One of the many things I learned from this, was the influence of an18th-19th century Japanese artist by the name of Horishige, not just on Hockney but on other artists such as Van Gogh. I’d never heard of him, but my interest was piqued.
Today was the last day of an exhibition of his work at the British Museum and it was completely sold out. As we sat and had breakfast at a lovely Italian cafe in Russell Square (see also Anniemay) we could see crowds of people making their way to the back entrance in Montague Place. Luckily we are members of the BM which means no booking or queuing. So we took our time before entering the fray.
One of the outcomes of the Hockney trip was a commission from Varnika to write an article about my impressions of the exhibition for her online Arts Magazine. She’s now asked me to do the same for the Horishige. This is a much harder challenge. There’s little I can say really. It’s not just the colours - it’s the stories he tells. I really am lost for words.
