End of an Era

Over this weekend the canal basin at the very end of the Aylesbury arm of the Grand Union canal was cleared as part of the continued 'waterside' development in the town.

The Aylesbury Canal Society has occupied (and maintained) the basin since 1971 but has been scheduled to move since 2007 when plans were approved for redevelopment of this area. The theatre (behind the basin) was completed in 2010. Two weeks ago a new Waitrose and Travelodge opened to the immediate right of the blip.

The canal society now have a new £2 million home a mile or so up the canal which has been described as some of the best inland waterway moorings in the country. Although it is definitely an upgrade, the existing site looked quite sad today with the society's "shed" somewhat forlorn, a single seated gentlemen sat amongst the old moorings deep in memories I imagine.

Compare today's photo with a blip of nearly the same scene from September 2012.
