William Wallace

This giant statue is in the Borders, overlooking the Tweed near Dryburgh Abbey, not far from Melrose. Barely legible in the picture, the inscription reads:

Erected by David Stuart
Erskine Earl of Buchan
WALLACE
GREAT PATRIOT HERO
ILL REQUITED CHIEF!
Joannes Smith Sculpsit
AD MDCCCXIV

The quote is from 18th century poet James Thomson, a favourite of the Earl of Buchan and commemorated by the Temple of the Muses which lies at the foot of the hill Wallace stands on. The statue was unveiled on the 22nd of September 1814, the anniversary of Wallace's great victory at the battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297.
