Ilulissat, Greenland

Further north again is Ilulissat (or Jacobshavn, everywhere in Greenland has at least two names) on Disko Bay. I’ve looked forward to visiting this place for years – although in none of my dreams was the raining falling torrentially throughout the duration of my visit.

Jacobshavn Fjord is often described as an iceberg factory – huge amounts of ice get pushed down the fjord from the Greenland icecap day after day. Once the bergs break off from the glacier they get pushed northwards up the east side of Baffin Bay, then southward down the west side of the bay until that they rumble down through “Iceberg Alley” off the Newfoundland Coast. It’s impossible to prove, but statistically the iceberg that the Titanic hit probably came from here.
