Triangular Lodge

Sir Thomas Tresham (who was the father of one of the Gunpowder plotters) was imprisoned 15 times for refusing to become a Protestant at a time when Catholicism was banned. While in prison he began to design this lodge as a protest and symbol of his Roman Catholic Faith. Built between 1593 and 1597 the lodge symbpolises the Holy Trinity and has 3 sides each 33ft long with Latin text of 33 letters running along each wall. It has 3 floors with 3 trefoil windows on each side on each floor. There are three ornamental gables on each side.
over the entrance is a Biblical quotation from St. John's Gospel "Tres Testomonium Dant" meaning "Three bear witness" or some think it may be that "Tres" refers to Sir Thomas as this was his wife's pet name for him, i.e. Tresham bears witness! There are a multitude of explanations for the numerous dates and numbers carved into the limestone building, all of which have some connection with the number 3 or a Biblical reference.
