This is the village of miramira, 28 km south west of Mzuzu, where wwellsforzoe have just helped them install a dam, to enable dry season irrigation. The "technology", which is unique in the area, will enable the village of seven households to be food secure this year.
Their rainy season crop of maize failed, due to their failure to get subsidised fertiliser. The Goverment gives very poor farmers coupons which should enable them to get fertiliser at quarter of its market cost, BUT the coupons came late and all the fertiliser was gone!!. Figure it out yourself.
The problem is not country wide but is widespread where we work. We are working on composting to fill the gap.
