One life to live

Young bright people...

... own the future. Passed this happy group in Tampere this morning.

Anyhow, today's news about Nokia weren't too happy. Nokia's phone business, the former flagship of Finnish industry and innovation, has been sold to Microsoft in a deal worth 5.44 billion euros. Nokia CEO Stephen Elop will return to Microsoft, while Nokia will concentrate on infrastructure, mapping and licensing.

Some great tweets I've read today:

"You don't need to be a Finn to take a moment to wonder whether Elop's loyalties have been entirely undivided over the past years." (Jukka Relander)

"Stephen Elop. I came. I saw. I sold." (Andre Wickström)

"Elop laughs on his way to a bank" (Pekka Pantsu)

"What was sold? Unprofitable reality, victorious history." (Pauli Aalto-Setälä)

The announcement of the sale of Nokia's handset business to software giant Microsoft Tuesday marks the final chapter of what for many symbolized the Finnish miracle – the rise of a small nation from an agrarian society to a major global player in technology and innovation.

Analyst Horace Dediu says: "Ultimately the old Nokia that we knew for 20–30 years is finished. What was a great story of a disruptor that stormed the market and established itself as the biggest brand and largest market share, that company is essentially no more."

Dediu concluded that Finland still has a strong intellectual base and education system that will eventually pay dividends in the development of the brave new world of mobile and wearable add-on services and applications.
