One small step closer

I know this isn't much of a picture, but it's kind of historic for those of us with kids at the local primary school. They've started to build the access road, which will eventually lead to the new school for the P4-P7s.

The whole topic has been very big news locally. The Council wanted to create a secondP1-P7 school in the town, rather than have one huge school on 2 campuses. The local community was worried that this would create divisions within the town and eventually it was decided to have one school with separate campuses for Infants and Juniors. This works pretty well in England, but it's not normal in Scotland. Understandably, many people are still concerned about whether or not it's the right thing to do. Although claims gets exaggerated, the school is one of the largest in Scotland.

Then there was all sorts of controversy with the land purchase, where the Counil had to apply for a Compulsory Purchase Order before they finally agreed terms with the landowner.

Just a local storm in a teacup if you're not a Dunbar resident, but it's featured quite heavily in my life for the past couple of years. Firstly, because we've got 3 kids who'll be at the school. Secondly, because my involvement with the parent council means I have to represent the parents' views at some Council meetings.

So, it's just a few men cutting down trees in Lochend Woods. But it felt like a milestone to me.
