shotlandka's weebig world

Local wildlife

Met this local inhabitant on the way up Catacol Glen with the dog today, after a bit of research online I think it's a female Araneus Diadematus, or a common European Garden Spider. Somewhat larger than any I've seen in a garden, as while this is a close up and cropped a bit, it's not that far off real size, of about the length, and a bit fatter than my thumb. It seems to have caught a wee fly, but was doing well at catching people as it had built its web across the gate at the foot of the Glen. I did also take some lovely landscape shots, one of which is particularly pretty in monochrome, but in the interests of blip diversity, here's the bug.
