Life in Newburgh on Ythan

By Talpa

Nature as abstract artist

Yesterday I posted a tranquil view of the Ythan estuary and expressed the wish that other, war-torn, places could be equally peaceful.

Of course this part of the world has not always been at peace. In the early 1940s there was the threat of invasion by Fascist Germany and the East Coast of Britain was heavily defended.

This little piece of art, skillfully crafted by Nature over the last 70 years is a memento of those eventful times. It is, or was, a porcelain insulator that helped support the telephone wires that stretched across the dunes to the gun battery at the mouth of the River Ythan.
