Spring Creek Canyon, Lush and Green

A weather front moved through, bringing showers followed by cooler weather. We had planned to go out on a one-night backpacking trip on this day. But at the last minute, the weather forecast called for a good chance of showers sometime between 3 and 9 pm. So we decided to run some errands in the morning and do an afternoon day hike instead.

Our little hike took us along the Spring Creek Canyon, which was looking lush and green. Bolstered by recent rains, the stream was running at a respectable rate. I snapped this photo not far from the bridge and the spillway, both of which you've seen before on these pages.

My husband, a Johnstown-area native, got his undergrad degree at the University of Florida in Gainesville. And so we used to visit northern Florida for about 10 days after Christmas every year. Why do I mention this? Because the green and lush Spring Creek Canyon scene reminded me of the Suwannee River, in north Florida.

The Suwannee River inspired the song Swannee River (also known as Old Folks At Home, the official state song of Florida) by Stephen Foster. And so the song to accompany this photo, which if you added a few cypress knees, would look a LOT like Florida's Suwannee River, is Hugh Laurie, with Swanee River. If you have any problems with that link, here's a second version, which is a live video of the performance.
