Ashford Mill Hydro

Thank you for the great comments on yesterday’s “Independence Day” golden hour blip. Many of you thought it looked like a scene from a sci-fi film. And thank you for lifting it to top place in the spotlight for most of today.

As much as I love good weather, sometimes, I pray for rain! Now is one of those instances and heavy rain was forecast for later today, and rain it did!!

This is a disused mill race. The sluice is part of our hydropower scheme here at home. There used to be a waterwheel here and hopefully, if our plans to restore the mill are approved, it will be reinstated in the next couple of years.

For most of the year, we open the sluice to allow a good volume of water through, it looks fabulous as a waterfall. As you can see, the sluice is wide open and yet the flow through is minimal.

So, today’s heavy downpour was very welcome. But would you believe it, the river has hardly risen.
