Bush Clematis / puawhanganga (Clematis paniculata)

This is only one of three big sprays of clematis flowers that are in a Manuka tree down our drive. The vine must have got blown out of the tops, as other years, the flowers are right up high. The power lines run very close to the Manuka tree, and when the power-line company have come around to trim trees, I have asked that they don't chop this one down as the Clematis will also come down. So far, they have left it standing.
The single flowers can be up to 10cm across, and are slightly fragrant. It normally flowers in September in the Sounds, but can flower up as late as November in other parts of the country. It is found throughout New Zealand in forests and along forest margins and in scrub. I have several seedling ones that have come up in the area around our house, but these ones haven't started flowering yet. The big vine was already growing & flowering, when we built the house over 20 years ago.
