Pepysman

Lest we forget...

After lunch with a friend of many years standing I walked up to Paisley Cross and was again struck by the power of the town's cenotaph. It was designed by Sir Robert Lorimer who also designed the National War Memorial in Edinburgh Castle. The cenotaph also gets an honourable mention in Jay Winter's book Sites of Memory.

I went there for the Remembrance Ceremony in 2008 (the ninetieth anniversary of the Armistice) and was struck by how many people under fifty were there. But then there has only been one year since 1945 when members of the British armed forces were not involved in a conflict somewhere in the world. Which one? I leave you guessing.
