Rose rosette?

Stayed in Woodhall Spa last night with Mr M's dad.

Whilst picking sloes this morning we came across these - on a wild rose bush where the rose hips should be. No idea what they are really, though they look similar to some images illustrating 'rose rosette disease'.

Any suggestions?
