Allen's Hummingbird

We returned this morning to San Joachin Wildlife Sanctuary, and immediately saw this bird. It flew off before I got my camera in gear, and though he returned briefly a couple of times I captured only a few shots. It's a male (note the bit of red on the side of the neck; the entire throat is red if properly reflecting).

Otherwise lots of shots of black-necked stilts and avocets in a calm pool with lovely reflections (perhaps a stilt for tomorrow's blip--we'll return before heading north for the next few days).

In the afternoon we went to Huntington Central Park--disappointing except for black-headed grosbeak and Townsend's warbler. Afterwards we returned to Bolsa Chica--much better, although the wind was uncomfortably strong and in fact a bit chilly. It was totally clear and sunny all day.
