The Heart of an Athlete

Just wanted to tell my youngest son good luck at his game this week. Soccer, or Futbol, has been such a great outlet for him. It allowed him to reign in all this energy and put it into focus. By nature, he is an all around good athlete. But it has been soccer that captured his heart. It's been interesting to see his development, the heartaches, the determination, the satisfaction. When he's faced with challenges, I watch to see which faucet of his personality will come out. When he is unsure and doubtful, he becomes very quiet and withdrawn and yet at other times he can become spiritual and philosophical. When it manifests into anger, he becomes arrogant on the outside but I know he's really suffering at that point. What I love most is seeing him come out of those cycles. It's this internal drive that shifts into gear and I can see him calculating how he's going to overcome obstacles. He has always been a great goal setter when the motivation is there. He will work to the bone to reach his goals. I've always compared him to having the temperament of the sun. He thrives on the combustion of the heat's energy. He's fiesty and radiant. Sometimes, like the sun, one can get a sunburn! Ha ha! But for the most part it's that radiance I love seeing when he plays. Good luck, son. Do what you do best. Shine! xo
