Boundary Dwellers

So who are we?

Tomorrow sees the second Rally for Independence in Edinburgh.

Here we are on the High St, outside the High Kirk of St Giles, just yards from statues of the Edinburgh-born philosopher David Hume, Kirkcaldy-born philosopher and economist Adam Smith, and Edinburgh-born founder of the world's first municipal fire service James Braidwood.

And here is clansman, posing and wielding his claymore for tourist photos.

What, I wonder, would the three rational gentlemen commemorated nearby have thought?

And how do we get people whose responses to the yes-no debate tend towards visceral sentimentality and nostalgia (guilt on both sides), to take a rational, honest approach to thinking through the choice they face?
