Monarch chrysalis

These are the amazingly beautiful chrysalises of the Monarch butterfly. New Zealand was not blessed with an enormous number of butterflies but they did have a population of Monarchs which did not seem to migrate anywhere. The caterpillars were very fussy, only eating one plant ,the swan plant, a kind of milkweed. They were very voracious, you can see the remains of the plant they are attached to.
