I don't understand

I was testing my mirror lens out of the bedroom window. What I don't understand is that I can read the numberplate of a car a mile and a half away through the EVF and yet when I take a shot I can't read it. There's no camera shake and the iso is low and it's taken in RAW. I don't understand why the detail I'm reading directly off the sensor isn't transfered when a shot is taken...
