Judging the jam

The Best of Bedminster (BOB) is an annual 'urban village' show held on a tiny green in our neighbourhood. It champions local baking, making, growing and community endeavours. Unheard of bands play alongside puppeteers, story tellers and wood turners. We come in our droves to drink tea and eat homemade cakes and let the kids roam.

'Bob' has been the esteemed judge of the best cake, jam, chutney and seasonal produce display since the show was inaugurated several years ago. His irreverant commentary and sharp banter keep the would-be earnest competitors from taking events too seriously. I usually time my arrival at the show to synchronise with the prize giving; it always makes me laugh. Bob brought his mum along this year to bring a bit of glamour to the proceedings.
