Hopetoun House

Not the usual view of this house which is usually taken from the north side looking towards the Adam wing. This view is from the garden side and the central block was the original house built in 1699 and designed by William Bruce. The wings are changes made later to designs by the Adam family.

Inside it is all very "Downton Abbey" with servants' stairs, bells, billiard tables, libraries and the dining room where George IV dined in 1822 during his state visit to Scotland which was orchestrated by Sir Walter Scott.

Friend and I then had an excellent lunch in the Hawes Inn in South Queensferry directly under the railway bridge.
