Note the "Pigeon Ticklers".

Stand by to be educated. I was.

Took a trundle into Newport today. And while passing through St. Thomas's Square I spotted this, above a rather odd facade.
1/3 Singer sewing machine shop
1/3 semi-arcade-style entrance
1/3 called “Visual impact something & Design”.

With typical skill and efficiency I shot only the sign C/W pigeon ticklers and never thought any more about it until we were home.

At this point all I knew about the “Oddfellows” was that they existed (or used to), couldn't remember not knowing of their existence and that there is a door in Penrith which has/had ”Oddfellows hall” carved in the sandstone lintel. Not that I recognised the Unity Hall over this one's door as one of theirs.

First, successful, hunt yielded >>>--------->
......... while passing through St Thomas's Square (Newport's central square around St Thomas's Church, a.k.a. Newport Minster) on impulse I dropped into Unity Hall, the Vecta Lodge of the Newport branch of the Oddfellows Friendly Society..........

SO! Having established the fact, WTF IS an Oddfellow and do they still exist.
Second hunt.>>>-------->
The ubiquitous WIKIwotnot, tells us...
The name Oddfellows refers to a number of friendly societies and fraternal organisations operating in the United Kingdom. It also refers to a number of Lodges with histories dating back to the 18th century. These various organisations were set up to protect and care for their members and communities at a time when there was no welfare state, trade unions or National Health Service. The aim was (and still is) to provide help to members and communities when they need it. The friendly societies are non-profit mutual organisations owned by their members. All income is passed back to the members in the form of services and benefits.

Third hunt >>>----->
They, themselves, certainly exist, and say...
Celebrating over 200 years of making friends and helping people, we’re a mutual, not for profit friendly society with the aim of ensuring that our 280,000 members, across 147 Branches, join together to enjoy the social side of life, as well as providing care advice and support in times of need.

For the record ... The thing we thought was an "L" while translating "Friendship, Love & Truth" turns out to be the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
