The Anderton Boat Lift

This remarkable piece of engineering was built to carry barges between the River Weaver and the Trent and Mersey Canal at Nantwich, Cheshire. There is a height of 50 ft between the two navigation systems. It was begun in 1872 and took 30 months to complete at a cost of £48,428 and was formally opened on 26th July 1875.
On such a beautiful day it was a real pleasure to ride along the river and experience travelling through this amazing structure on the pleasure barge the Edwin Clark.
Yes, we were "proper tourists" today!
