this is typical of the living arrangements of many in Oxford - I'm guessing a shared house owned by the university (most are). You often see the same details - clothes hanging up to dry in bedroom, Green Party poster (a big political force round here), rickety old fire escape. I moved into such a place myself, many years ago, and ended up marrying the guy who owned the shirts.
