Porty People and Places

It was twenty years ago today that UK TV Shopping Channels started broadcasting. Not only did I not know this but I have never bought anything through such a medium either! Internet shopping, out of town shopping and even TV shopping channels are all threats to the High Street. Luckily Portobello High Street seems resilient, so far, from such threats. The closure of the Ironmongers on the High Street, however, will be not be compensated for by the opening of this big R shop built on the site of the former big W and across the road from the big A!

The train leaving Brunstane station has a further 3/4 of a mile run to the Park and Ride at Newcraighall which is the current terminus. In a few years it will continue for another 35 miles to Tweedbank on the reclaimed Waverley route. This project is currently the largest civil engineering project in the country with work happening simultaneously on all parts of the route. Sitting on the right of an inbound flight to Edinburgh from the east, recently, I got a brilliant view of almost the whole route. Like the Edinburgh trams there used to be a perfectly serviceable network deemed to be no longer fit for purpose in modern post 2nd World War Britain!
