double happiness

We discovered on this date last year (10/1/2012) that October 1 is International Sake Day -- which serendipitously coincides with our wedding anniversary! So once again, we enjoyed a sake tasting at Sakaya - a very fine sake shop in the East Village, followed by a fabulous sushi dinner at Blue Ribbon

There were five different sakes set out for tasting and we especially liked this one -- Fukuju. Turns out that this is the sake that was served at the Nobel Prize Award ceremony dinner -- which was then broadcast on Japanese television. This brought great popularity to the tiny sake brewery - which couldn't meet the added demand.

We purchased this bottle (now only available in very limited quantities and only in the US) and it turned out to be the last one (at least here in NYC)

The Japanese calligraphy on the label translates as "double happiness" - it is our second wedding anniversary so this seemed like the perfect complement. And perhaps some of the brilliance of the Nobel laureates will rub off on us...? We can only hope :)
