A Lonely Road to Downtown's Lights

Looking along a deserted Waterloo Place towards the sparkling lights of Princes Street, the contrast is extraordinary - as though darkness has restored the city boundaries of a century ago, before the Regent bridge was built and Waterloo Place dug through the middle of the old Calton Burial Ground to make a new link to 'the great London road' (now, rather more prosaically, the A1).

At this time of night, with its subdued lighting and the remnants of the graveyard to either side, it's missing only a spooky theme tune.
