Admiral Sir Bertram Ramsay

A statue of him that stands overlooking the Channel just below Dover Castle.

We waved goodbye to the Royal Hotel in Deal and set off on the short drive to Dover Castle. What a magnificent hilltop of buildings, tunnels and rather too many spiral staircases for my liking. The weather was perfect when we arrived but later it absolutely chucked it down.

I snapped this as the the storm clouds starting moving in. Admiral Sir Bertram Ramsay was the man in charge of Operation Dynamo, the evacuation of the British Army from Dunkirk in May to June 1940.

Dover Castle is really well worth a visit, particularly the underground tunnel tour. There is so much to see and do there that you need a whole day to appreciate it.

We've made it back home before any rush hour snarl ups on the M25. I will catch up with all your lovely journals over the next 24 hours.
