Maltings Minarets

I took my DSLR to Carl at Photosound in Bishops Stortford this morning to have the sensor cleaned. I snapped this pic to be used as an emergency Blip. Just as well as I can’t have my gear back until tomorrow.

The pic was taken in the shadow of controversial Cecil Rhodes’ house. He was the founder of the state of Rhodesia (now Zambia and Zimbabwe) the De Beers diamond company and the Rhodes Scholarship, which benefitted Bill Clinton.

I have read that minarets were designed, apart from being a visual focal point and used for the call to prayer, as a sort of air conditioning for the mosque. The structures on the malt house roof are for a similar purpose, drawing the warm air up and out.
