Are you looking at me?

The one on the left may well be Travis Bickle and the guy with the blue suede trainers could be Matthew "Sport" Higgins but the one on the right is definitely William "Deacon" Brodie. What they all have in common is a distinctive dress sense. By the looks of the chains attached to him Brodie is a slave to fashion.

This scene was shot at the entrance to Brodie's Close which used to house his family residence and now houses the Deacon's House Cafe. It also has Bonnie Prince Charlie hiding behind a wheelie bin, which just goes to show what a popular place this is.

Brodie was a cabinet-maker, deacon of a trades guild and an Edinburgh councillor in the mid 18th century and had a secret life as a burglar, partly to fund his gambling and partly for the sheer thrill of it all and to help keep his five children and two mistresses. No wonder he needed a walking stick to get around. He was eventually caught and tried for an armed raid on the excise office and hanged for it in October 1788.

I'm intrigued by the sign that offers indoor and outdoor seating - that's just a chair isn't it?
