Seaford Head

Be glad you don’t live in Seaford on the Sussex coast east of Brighton. In the 16th century the inhabitants were known as ‘shag’s, because of their enthusiasm for looting ships wrecked in the bay.

We were there today for lunch with an old friend, at Diella’s, a friendly restaurant just off the sea front with amazing seafood among other things. It was one of those lovely get togethers after many years when time drops away and the years roll back. As if we’d met last week. Love it.

Seaford was an important port back in the Middle Ages, until the harbour started silting up and there were repeated raids by the French. They burned the town down several times between 1350 and 1550.

Today it’s a very pleasant town with a lot of regeneration going on. The temperature was 20 degrees all day, with a warm breeze and a practically cloudless sky. Wonderful day. Can it really be October?

This is Seaford Head to the east of the town. It forms part of the Seaford to Beachy Head SSSI. Impressive miles of white cliffs.
