Mostly looking North

Kayaking in Croatia - Grand Hotel

On the small island of Lopud, where we were staying, we stumbled across the imposing but crumbling Grand Hotel. The internet says it was built in 1936 and was significant in its use of concrete. It's very difficult not to see it without half thinking of some of the social housing built much further north some 30 or 40 years later. But I liked it.

The family who commissioned it, still live on the island. They owned the hotel were we breakfasted, that doubles as a cafe/bar. I talked to the son of the family, perhaps the great-grandson of whoever commissioned it, who was serving us beers. It made me uncomfortably aware of my status as a tourist.
