Guinness

A trip to Dublin wouldn't be complete without an excursion to the Guinness Storehouse to enjoy a cold Guinness and the views over the city from the Gravity Bar. The history of the Storehouse itself is actually pretty interesting, the whole exhibition has really been well thought-out and manages to be both modern and interactive.

The absolute highlight of the holiday, however, had to be a tour through Kilmainham Gaol. Only a few Euros, the tour was an absolutely fascinating explanation of the history of the jail and its relevance in Irish history all the way up until the Irish Civil War and the confirmation of the Irish Free State. Kilmainham has housed some of the most famous names in the fight for Irish independence and to know the history of the city is to understand Ireland and the fight for Irish independence so much more, even if you have previously studied Irish history.

The evening was concluded with a trip to the Abbey Theatre to see a production of George Bernard Shaw's Major Barbara - we could hardly miss out on a production written by an Irish playwright in the national theatre.
