Ellie pup!

We'd had our fingers crossed we would get an elephant seal pup on one of our beaches as they tend to all head for the South Georgia mainland. So we were very excited yesterday when Craig, on his way to do some repairs to one of the little huts, radioed back with the news of this little one popped out on Landing Beach.

A pair of skuas, who are looking pretty desperate for food at the moment and taking risks they normally wouldn't, were hanging about trying to snatch a bit of placenta or umbilical cord. The mother was pretty vocal in defending her new youngster. We look forward to seeing it grow.
