THE DINNER BELLE

Today we fit in a trip to the horse barns at Michigan State University to check on the foals that were born this past spring. They are still nursing, but by now are very long-legged juveniles. We spent a lot of the time grabbing hands-full of clover (in abundance on our side of the fence), and feeding the horses through the fence.

It was nearly dinner time at the paddock, and it seemed to be the job of this beautiful mare to alert the others when the feed would arrive. With about 20 mares and foals in this area, she was the only one who stayed back away from the group, alert with ears perked to watch for the food truck to start out. When it did, she let out a whinny and the others immediately stopped whatever they were doing to run to the other side of the yard where the troughs are located.

I wanted to post a picture of a youngster but I couldn’t get a clear shot of them. They were so interested in the people at the fence, and I didn’t think a shot of a horse covered by wire fencing made a very good picture.

Thank you so much for all your comments on yesterday’s owl! I appreciate them all so much. I’ll catch up with comments tomorrow. Getting today’s blip posted is about all I could get to today.
