Ramblings and Mutterings

Love adventure? Live life!

After becoming the first person to reach the summit of Everest, it is reported after he’d come back down to tell his story that Sir Edmund Hillary said “it is not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves.” Tonight at St. David’s Hall, Cardiff, Sir Chris Bonington also said the same thing at the end of his most excellent and informative talking about his life and his adventures.

At 79 years old, one of Britain’s best mountaineers is still full of life and keen to challenge himself and have adventures around the world. His talk was about his life with photos and videos from some of his expeditions, and what a life it has been! Four expeditions on Everest, the first British ascent of the north face of the Eiger and many, many other first ascents on some of the highest and most challenging peaks across the world. But when you’re taking on these peaks, you’re also risking death and sadly he has seen many of his friends die during these expeditions.

He’s a man who is very humble about his achievements and had plenty of time for people during the interval and at the end of his talk, as he signed books, DVDs, posters and had his photograph taken with people. He really is an inspiration and continues to chase his dreams! I’m going to do the same!
