Stirling stuff

As my lovely friend Jo took me from a beer festival in Alloa to a great wee Italian restaurant in Doune today, we stopped for a moment at the hillside statue/monument to the inspirational David Stirling, founder and original leader of the SAS.

Most military statues appear to me as bombastic, glorifying a person usually responsible for many deaths. This one feels different, with less flamboyant garb, far more grounded in the dirt and unpleasantness of war and the potential necessity of extreme violence.

Mind you, his descendants are a rum lot.
