Galson Kiln

It was such a glorious day today, it was a pleasure to be outside. This is an image of the old grain-drying kiln in South Galson. Most of the stonework has fallen down now, but you can still make out the details. I am standing in the door area, on the right you can just make out a narrow stone-lined channel that would feed the hot air from the fire in the foreground towards the 'bowl' where A is standing at the rear of the kiln. Grain would be spread in this stone bowl to dry out, before being taken to South Dell for milling. I don't know why this kiln is so far out on the edge of the village, but this style of kiln was used for a long time, from the early 100's back at least a thousand years to the Norse habitation - possibly older. Perhaps we should erect an interpretative sign to explain the heritage to the tourists?
