The Belly Of The Beast

A long time coming this one, a colleague at work set me the challenge of getting an image of “The Belly of the Beast” at the airport.

The challenge simple, or so I thought. Get a picture of one of the giant cargo planes taking off as it flies over the end of the runway. Unfortunately the parts of the airport where you can see the ground operations, and hence work out when she is going to leave, are too far away from the shooting location to be able to move.

Tonight we were lucky enough to see her heading in whilst up in Irvine doing the shopping. On the way back we stopped on a hill at the east end of the runway to see if we would be lucky. I was over the moon then I noticed the navigation lights coming on just after we stopped and shortly after that the aircraft was being pushed back. A short drive to the bottom of the hill and we were in place for the shot.

So Snowy tonight I give you Cargolux 747 (LX-OCV) City of Differdange on route from Prestwick to Luxembourg. The Belly of the Beast.

You will find a couple of her sister aircraft in the Wings Over Prestwick series.
