Peat House

A short run out from Boot in Eskdale on Saturday along some of the old peat roads and footpaths. The cutting of peat was an important part of the farming economy from the eighteenth century up until the first world war. Thirty five huts have been identified, largely from aerial photography this is one of the later ones probably from the 1860s and still has a slate roof.

A great weekend with the dinner to celebrate this year's completers of the Joss Naylor Challenge, unfortunately our glad rags had been left at home, so walking kit had to be worn - stuff happens : )
