I was here for the final day of the Bath Festival to hear the artistic director, Joanna MacGregor, perform the monumental 'Vingt Regard sur l'Enfant Jesus' by the devout French composer Olivier Messiaen. I don't know why, but, often, the music that most moves and deeply affects me these days is religious in nature - Mavis Staples pouring her soul into The Forum, Trio Mediaeval in this same church, singing hymns to the Virgin Mary, and this magnificent piece. I find it surprising because I'm an adamant non-believer, but I do think that there is much in this music to appeal on a purely humanist lelvel.
