fall ball

This may well be the last of my son's football adventures; he's opting for cross country as his favored fall sport next year. May I admit great relief? He'll never be a big kid -genes just are not on his side. But, quick? That he is.

There's something to be said for this all-American pastime, though. The magical concoction of sight and sound and smell that deliver autumn directly to the soul. The clap of pads colliding. The earthy tang of turf. The warm glimmer of auburn sun setting over the field as whistles blow and teammates holler encouragement.

This is good.
