Under Titan's Gaze...

Artist Alec Galloway, one of the driving forces behind the Absent Voices project, is well known for his stunning glass work. He was also a finalist in the prestigious Aspect Prize for painting a few years ago.

Born in Greenock, he knows the ins and outs of the dock area like the back of his hand.

He says he remembers seeing Jimmy Watt, the veteran Inverlcyde maritime artist, drawing and painting down at the waterfront when he was a wee boy. This made a lasting impression on him.

Alec is doing an extensive project relating to glass for Absent Voices, which we will document as the months go on, but for now, feast your eyes on this work-in progress.

As part of his work for Absent Voices, he will be doing works based on drawings that he has done underneath the mighty Titan Crane, which is very close to the sugar sheds at James Watt dock.

This large fitting out crane, or Titan Cantilever Crane, is visible as you approach the dock and was built in 1917 by Sir William Arrol & Co.

The 150t structure is a Category A listed structure and is one of only four left in Scotland. There were 40 Titan Cranes were built by Arrol & Co and sent all around the world.
