Scales

This piece of wonderful ironwork forms part of some scales on the platform of Great Malvern Station. The scales could cope with 20 cwt. Otherwise known as 20 Hundredweight or one ton. The abbreviation is 'cwt' because 'C' is the Roman symbol for 100; but 1 hundredweight is 112 lbs, not 100 lbs.

The scales were manufactured by Henry Pooley & Son Ltd. They were a mechanical engineering company specialising in the manufacture of weighing machines. In 1913 the firm became part of the Avery organisation.
