Urban heron

We got a bus up to the Dean Bridge and walked back home along the Water of Leith. The river was running full and fast, full of leaves and mud, but it wasn't too windy and we scarcely got rained on at all.

I caught a glimpse of Mr H's kingfisher and we saw several herons, but this was my favourite. He used to stand out here when the car park belonged to a Greek restaurant and rumour had it that the chef would occasionally toss him some calamari. That was three years ago, mind - I don't know the average lifespan of a heron. It could be a descendant, standing at the traditional hunting post of a Canonmills heron. Poor creature isn't to know that the place has changed hands and is now a vegetarian establishment!
