Julie's Pump

Julie was the driving force behind this pump which provides irrigation water for the school garden at our orphan day care centre in Salisbury line.
She was assisted in digging the well and making the cover, by Tara and Jacqui, she helped William with the fabrication of the pump and she fitted the pump all by herself; what a woman.
This is the second pump on the site, and relieves the strain on the pump for the school, which not alone provides water for the 250 little ones each day, but also to the wider community who often form long queues for the precious commodity.
Julie is a teacher of I.T. at Bishop?s Stortford College in Hertfordshire, in the UK, and is on her third visit to Malawi. She was a wonderful addition to our crew of volunteers this Summer.
The picture also shows Tara, who is a primary teacher from County Mayo and Jacqui from County Tipperary who is student Officer in Griffith College Dublin.
Continuing from the left we have Charity, who is the school principal, Dorothy who is the manager and Miriam who is our newest teacher.
They are surrounded by a great group of girls who help in the garden and at mealtime.
