Dear Sir

To the King's Theatre, Edinburgh, for the touring production of To Sir With Love. I've seen the Sixties movie with Sidney Poitier, Judy Geeson and Lulu, and expected a light drama culminating in the famous title song. Instead, writer Ayub Khan-Din (East is East) goes back to source material, ER Braithwaite's memoir of his first year of teaching in an inner London school in 1948, and gives us a terrific straight drama. In Ansu Kabia, the show has a star with the good looks and dignity of Poitier, but his own presence, while Matthew Kelly lends sterling support as the visionary headmaster. But enough, this ain't no review! This is a Blip - check out my excellent colleague Joyce McMillan's thoughts in the Scotsman tomorrow or online, see if she agrees with me that this is a superb show, not to be missed. See if she mentions the splendid ensemble cast, the sharp scene chances, the evocation of a casually racist world that betrays the values men and women fought a war for ... Did I mention that you should go?
