Sunset on Stromboli

A climb of about 1,000m took us from sea level to the summit of Stromboli. It wasn't even slightly technical and the pace was set deliberately slow. The climb is carefully timed so that the groups arrive at sunset, which is obviously when I took this picture.

The steaming crater can clearly be seen - in fact we had a view down to it. It was a quiet night on Stromboli, just a couple of small eruptions sent fire into the sky. To see this, check out Houblon's blip. He carried his big camera and tripod all the way up and got some great shots of the action.

I'm not a great fan of descents, but on Stromboli it's easy - soft volcanic ash all the way. It was completely dark, so head torches were required. A few drinks were downed to finish the evening. An excellent experience.
