The Coliseum

This building began life as a roller skating rink and then in 1911 was converted into a cinema (the Coliseum, which stopped operating in 1942) and dance hall (the Palais de Danse, which seems to have carried on until the 1960s). The dance hall had a revolving stage which meant two bands could play one after the other without a break in the music. Allegedly a young Sean Connery was a regular (which would make sense as he lived nearby) and may even have worked here as a bouncer. It later became a bingo hall (as so many former cinemas did) and finally closed in 2006. There's a fab, somewhat Shining-esque photo here of some folks having a fine old time here in the 1940s.

Better bigger!
